Although Will Smith is known for his acting, fashion influence, and the smack heard around the world many forgot that he actually had studio albums. On March 29, 1988 The Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff released their second studio album He’s The DJ, I’m The Rapper.
As a young Latina in New York I felt like the only shows that I had access to were the novelas that my grandmother would watch. As much as they looked like me it was just hard to relate to them. Most of them consisted of infidelities with the garden boy that would most likely end in murder. For a long time I just didn’t posses the strength to turn a television on and this redirected me to always listen to music. This was an era where radio was at it’s height so having your walkman on while riding your bike was a must. The kids from the neighborhood would always meet after school with their bikes. I remember everyone talking about the shows they would watch, name dropping titles Living Single, In Living Color, and Fresh Prince. I had never heard of these shows before and tuned in as soon as I could. I was in awe because I felt connected to the storylines and characters. At the time I would always get picked on because of how I dressed and seeing women on TV dress similar just felt so empowering. What latched me was fact that I would see some of my favorite artist being featured in episodes, but most importantly these shows introduced me to new artist and their music.
